Overcoming the Problem of Truckie Fatigue

Truckie fatigue is more than just an issue of tiredness and can actually by an indication of an underlying chronic condition such as sleep apnoea.

Although fatigue is a major safety concern, truck drivers don’t need to live with this condition, there is something they can do about it.

Fatigue can be eliminated through control measures and planning, however this may not always be possible, in which case measures should be undertaken to control the risk of harm from fatigue.

Some of the warning signs of fatigue that can be detected early and should not be ignored include, yawning, poor concentration, tired eyes, restlessness, drowsiness, slow reactions, boredom and oversteering.

The best way to make sure you minimise your risk of suffering from fatigue is by taking care of your health, get enough sleep and eat healthily.

Also when engaging in shift work, you become particularly vulnerable to fatigue. Get close to the average amount of required daily sleep, at least seven to eight hours a day. Drivers should also be aware that the effects of sleep are less effective when split between day and night as the body’s internal clock is affected.  Because our bodies are day orientated and light and noise during the day can mean that sleep quality is poorer, so ensure sleeping conditions are as favourable as possible.

Golden Rules of Long Distance Driving to Avoid Fatigue Include:

  • Take frequent rest stops throughout the journey, preferably every 2 hours for about 15 minutes.
  • Avoid driving when tired, take a nap and rejuvenate if necessary
  • Get out of the vehicle when tired and get fresh air. Take a walk and stretch to get your blood circulating and keep you alert.
  • Avoid using the heater as it can cause drowsiness. When cold, direct warmth to the feet and allow fresh air on your face or you will feel tired and may fall into a micro sleep.
  • Keep your mind active by listening to the radio while driving.
