Truck drivers are exposed to so many risks to their health and safety every day which is why the release of new truck emergency safety guidelines is so welcomed.

The guidelines are focused on assisting truck drivers to stay safe while on the side of the road repairing broken down trucks.

The title of the guidelines is “The Truck Emergency Breakdown and Roadside Safety guidelines” and was launched last week at Freight Week.

The guidelines focus heavily on assisting employers/operators, drivers and mechanical service providers to avoid being injured while broken down on the side of the road.

The guidelines also outline what to do when you break down. Many truck drivers are overwhelmed when their vehicle breaks down and react instinctively. The guide helps drivers by teaching them how to react in the event of a breakdown especially where the driver is forced to park the vehicle on the side of the road. The driver needs to know how to exit safely and place the warning triangles safely without endangering themselves or being run over.

Industry and WorkSafe Victoria representatives was developed the guidelines following a request from the Victorian Transport Association. The guidelines build upon the previous document that truckies used to ensure safe loading and unloading of vehicles which was released in 2011.
