New Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) verified gross mass (VGM) regulations set to come into effect in July are expected to impact port haulage firms, shipping lines, exporters, freight forwarding and customer broking representatives and stevedores. There are also concerns about who responsibility will lie with under the reforms if a container is turned away because of its weight. The reforms strengthen weighing rules by addressing over-weight containers. Coordinated action between all parties involved is necessary to facilitate a smooth transition.
