A truck driver had to flee his truck as it went up in flames on the M5 recently, causing major delays for motorists as the cleanup continued.

According to reports the vehicle veered into the side of the road before bursting into flames in the middle of the M5 motorway at Beverley Hills. The incident took place just before 2:30am and the following morning motorists were delayed for up to 7km.

Some motorists were apparently panicked by the flames, with smoke billowing from the blaze.

Traffic was backed up in a westbound direction as only one lane was opened to traffic. The motorway on the city-bound side was closed for some time.

A heavy duty tow truck had to be brought in to remove the burnt frame of the truck and its semi-trailer away.
