The truck driver responsible for the June 2015 crash which claimed the life of teacher Maria Dowdell, has been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment and had his license suspended for 15 years.

The judge labelled the truck driver as a”an accident waiting to happen”.

The court described the driver’s history as appalling, demonstrating “flagrant disregard” for road rules and community safety.

The judge said the drivers 3 decades of driving prior to the crash that killed Maria Dowdell included a number of convictions including speeding offences, incidents of dangerous driving and driving a heavily laden semi-trailer while under the influence of methylamphetamine.

The truck driver was found guilty at trial of causing the death of Mrs Dowdell on the Swanport Bridge on National Highway in 2015.

The judge jailed the driver for five years with a non-parole period of three years, 10 months and 21 days.
