A grandfather who was doing gardening in his brother-in-law’s yard has been killed after a tipper truck lost control and crashed through a fence.

Following the incident during which the Hino truck mowed into the garden of a Merrylands home killing the man who was shoveling soil into a wheelbarrow at the time, a grieving relative has described the road as a “death street”.

It is believed the truck clipped a car traveling in the opposite direction and lost control. The truck then crossed an intersection and plowed through 3 yards before hitting a house and knocking out a window frame on impact. Some brickwork was also damaged.

The 82 year old grandfather’s  body was discovered on the scene and his 75 year old brother-in-law was critically injured and rushed to Westmead Hospital, it was his home that they working at when the tragedy occurred.

A cousin of the men involved said the road was extremely dangerous. She said vehicles would speed in so fast because they think they are still on the freeway and the Cumberland Council should consider installing traffic circles.
