We’ve often heard it said that driving tired is as bad as driving drunk but a study out of the University of California reveals how and why.
According to Professor Itzhak Fried and his team, exhausted neurons in the brain respond slower than usual and take longer to transmit weaker signals.
A lack of sleep can lead to poor concentration throughout the day, which as we know is dangerous when behind the wheel.
The study involved 12 tired epileptic patients who had electrodes implanted into their brains to see where the seizures originated.
Researchers said sleep deprivation affects the brain like excessive alcohol consumption. In subjects prone to epileptic attacks, a lack of sleep triggered seizures.
