According to new road trauma data, released by Roads and road safety minister Luke Donnellan, Transport Accident Commission (TAC) CEO Joe Calafiore and VicRoads acting CEO Peter Todd, 155 people died on rural roads in Victoria last year.

Head-on collisions were responsible for 37 deaths and 109 people were killed in a crash where a vehicle left its lane. Single vehicle crashes on the roadside were responsible for the deaths of 72 people.

Rural Victorian roads are over represented once again, rising from 150 deaths to 155 deaths in 2017. The overall number of deaths for the state dropped from 290 in 2016 to 257 in 2017.
It was revealed that 1 in 5 serious injuries took place on high-speed regional roads. Run-off-road crashes were a major factor in regional road crash fatalities.
The state government has committed $1.1 billion towards road safety initiatives over the 5 year period between 2016-2020.
