Getting More Women Behind The Wheel of Trucks in Australia

Women truck drivers are hoping to recruit more females into road transport with girl guide badges just one of the ways they are introducing young girls to trucks.

With a shortage of drivers looming and the lure of equal pay, women in the transport industry are hoping more females will join.

The chair of Transport Women Australia (TWAL), Jacquelene Brotherton said her organisation is trying to encourage young girls to consider joining the transport industry.

TWAL is working with Girl Guides Australia, creating a ‘wheels’ achievement badge for the Guides, helping to raise awareness about the career opportunities for women in transport.

The image of  a truck driver needs a makeover, Brotherton believes and girls need to become familiar with trucks early in life, so they will be more open to it.

Brotherton says they have already seen positivity towards trucks from the girls.
