An inquiry into the Australian National Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 has called for zero road deaths and serious injuries, it says nothing else should be acceptable.

The inquiry’s final report which was released by Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack, found that the existing plan has failed.

The report recommended that the government adopts a policy of “vision zero” with the target of no road deaths and no serious injuries by 2050 across the country.Until then the report calls for a target of zero deaths and serious injuries by 2030 for every capital city’s CBD and major highways.

It also noted that more deaths occur on country roads.Last year 1226 people died on Australian roads and 36,000 were injured.

Dr Crozier, the chair of the Trauma Committee at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons said we have become complacent about road safety and don’t take seriously the “huge silent public health epidemic” from road crashes.
