The Transport Workers Union (TWU) says the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) should be focusing on fatigue but not on fatigue monitoring technology trials but rather a solution to the problem.

The federal government’s joint announcement with the NHVR that it would fund field trials of SmartCap technology and other driver fatigue monitoring technologies and initiatives was met with criticism by some parties in the industry including the TWU.

The government pledged $302,000 towards field trials of SmartCape technology and the NHVR pledged $250,000 towards the trial of other fatigue monitoring technologies including in-cabin sensors and on-person sensors.

While the TWU commended efforts to address the issue, they say the federal government is not finding a meaningful solution to the problem.
