As part of the National Compliance and Information System (NCIS), supported by the Federal Government and National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR), new heavy vehicle monitoring cameras have been placed on both sides of the ACT’s Federal Highway near the NSW border.

The cameras will photograph the front of each heavy vehicle that passes it and record the date, time and number plate.

Two lanes in each direction as well as the emergency lanes will be monitored by the 6 new cameras that have automatic number plate recognition technology.

Data collected from the cameras will feed into the NCIS to collect real-time monitoring and compliance data.

The high tech cameras will be rolled out across the nation in the coming years to improve road safety and encourage better driving practices.
