Following the release of a report into road incidents, it is clear all drivers need to be on the lookout for cyclists to avoid collisions especially given that cycle deaths in Australia have increased over the 2017-2018 period. The number of cyclist deaths rose 80 per cent from the previous year, according to an Australian Automobile Association report.
In Canberra the number of cyclists involved in crashes that are reported to police annually rose to 200 (although not all of which involved vehicles and not all resulted in injury).
The main cause of crashes that result in cyclists’ injury are collisions at right angles. Being sideswiped or hit by another vehicle pulling out from the curb or a driveway are also frequent causes of accidents.
