A TRUCK driver who allegedly swerved along busy highways during the Easter weekend was almost 11 times over the legal limit when he was caught by members of the public. The Kenworth B-double was allegedly travelling north along the M5 and the M7 just after midday on Easter Sunday when he took an exit and tried to reverse back onto the highway. Police said when he was prevented by traffic and then continued driving and jack-knifed while trying to do a U-turn in the driveway of a BP service station. When the driver attempted to get back behind the wheel, he was stopped by several members of the public who held him until police arrived. Police said Liverpool City Police found the driver “being held on the ground by witnesses and BP staff’. After the 50-year-old driver from Clear Island Waters in Queensland was arrested for returning a blood-alcohol level of 0.282 (nearly twice the “high range” reading), as he held an interstate driver’s licence, his New South Wales driving privileges were revoked and he was issued with a suspension notice. The driver was charged with high range drink driving, solo driver work more than the standard maximum time and driver not give information to record keeper as prescribed. He was conditionally bailed to appear at the Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday, April 24. The arrest was part of Operation Toitoise, the Easter long-weekend road safety operation which started Thursday morning and will run until midnight on Monday. Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy told The Daily Telegraph that there were no excuses for anyone to drive after drinking to excess. “Too many people are risking their own and other people’s lives with their reckless and stupid decisions.” he said. “The message is clearly still not getting through and I fear that for many of the drivers and riders out there, it may only sink in after it’s too late.” Police did more than 250,000 breath tests over the weekend, with 228 charged with drink driving offences.
