This incident highlights the dangers of road freight transportation and the need for safety. In another incident which raises the alarm for truck safety is the one that occurred in Banyo, Brisbane last week. The incident left a truck driver critical in hospital after his truck was hit by a train in a bizarre incident that police are still investigating. The incident left a truck driver seriously injured with both pelvic and leg injuries. It is believed that the truckie was attempting to drive across the tracks in semi-trailer when the truck became stuck in the tracks and collided with a train.  Apparently the boom gates closed behind the truck which may have caused him to become trapped. Another train then collided with vehicles at a level crossing. The truck was then split in two, becoming wedged between the two trains. This report by News.ninemsn.com.au highlights the incident as seen by witnesses on the train platform:
“I’m not sure what was wrong, whether it was the brakes or what, but the [truck] driver got out to fix it. He was pressing some buttons underneath the truck,” he told the newspaper. Mr Mahoney then watched as the north-bound train came “roaring in” and “just took out the semi”.  “The driver was still underneath. We got off our train and all you could smell was the burn of the emergency brakes.”  A Queensland Police spokesman confirmed the driver and another man were working near the truck as the oncoming train approached. “He was attempting to do what he could do to move the truck,” a spokesman said. Another resident, David Makeham, 54, said he was woken up by the sound of the collision.  “There was screeching and a loud crunch. It was something, you don’t really know what it is. It disturbs you,” he told the Brisbane Times. The truck was split into two pieces with the prime mover left on one side of the tracks and the trailer ending up on the other.
