The consequences of failing to properly check rigs has been highlighted by the recent sentencing of a truck driver who received a 2 year jail sentence.
Nathaniel Marc Mathies a truck driver who ran freight between Gladstone and Biloela apparently overslept and was trying to make up time when the crash occurred that resulted in the death of a car driver.
The driver ignored his employer’s advice and failed to properly check a dolly that linked the trailers. The dolly detached and the trailer collided with a car.
The driver of the car died in hospital after sustaining pelvic injuries and puncturing his right pulmonary vein.
The truckie was sentenced to 2 years jail time and will be eligible for parole in five months. He was found guilty of dangerously operating a vehicle and causing death.
