A nationwide blitz has highlighted the massive problem of drug use among truck drivers with more than a dozen truckies pulled over testing positive for drugs and others driving defected vehicles.
During the blitz police conducted random screenings and checks on 527 heavy vehicle drivers, with 15 of them returning positive methylamphetamine readings. One also tested positive for THC (cannabis) and 2 tested positive for THC alone.
SA Police Traffic Support Branch Inspector Ben Spencer said the heavy transport industry was changing for the better but there are some rogue companies that still aren’t complying with the rules.
During the blitz police issued 70 expiation notices, 42 defect notices and 10 drivers were reported for a range of offences.
He said these are professional drivers who should know better than to use drugs. Those using drugs to combat fatigue are putting the safety of other road users at risk, he said.
