Speeding, disobeying traffic controls and driving unregistered were the most common traffic offences committed over the long weekend in Bendigo. In Bendigo, police caught 191 people committing traffic offences over the long weekend. Speeding offences were the most common, with 84 people apprehended in the region. Police have warned drivers that anyone who breaks the law on Victorian roads could cause devastation, or death.

In Bendigo police recorded the following offences:

• One drink driver
• Five drug drivers
• Two disqualified drivers
• Eight unlicensed drivers
• 84 people speeding
• 17 people disobeying traffic controls
• Four seat belt offences
• Nine people using mobile phones while driving
• 17 unregistered vehicles
• Two pedestrian offences
• Two cyclist offences

Police impounded six cars over the long weekend in Bendigo. Speeding was the most common offence police detected the Goldfields, Campaspe and Macedon Ranges service areas. Fifty-seven people were caught speeding in the Goldfields, 23 in Campaspe and 32 in the Macedon Ranges. The offences police detected in central Victoria were among 11,674 throughout the state. Road Police Command assistant commissioner Stephen Leane said anyone who breaks the law on the roads could cause devastation. “Every driving offence, be it speeding, drink or drug driving, or failure to wear seatbelts, can take a life in a split second,” he said. “Every person that gets behind the wheel of a car needs to realise this and accept the responsibility they have to ensure that they themselves and the motorists they share the road with get home safely.” Three people died on the roads over the long weekend, bringing the 2019 road toll to 101. Forty more lives have been lost on the roads in 2019 than at the same time in 2018, making the road toll 65.6 percent higher. Sixty people have died on rural roads and eight in provincial cities and towns, accounting for the largest proportion of the lives lost.
