Speeding seems to be a problem that is still very prevalent on our roads. Just this week a young truck driver was caught travelling 30 km per hour over the speed limit on The Hume Highway, significantly increasing his chances of crashing the vehicle and possibly affecting innocent road users as well.
The 23-year-old male truck driver was issued with infringement notices for exceeding the speed limit over 20 km/h and not completing work diary entries. Until further inspection, the truck has been grounded.
Although police are doing their best to root out this type of unacceptable behaviour drivers and all in the chain of responsibility need to do their part. Companies need to ensure that their trucks comply with regulations in terms of load restrictions, licences, drivers rosters, speed limiters etc. and drivers need to ensure the same.
While reducing speed can cut fuel usage and cost, as well as lower greenhouse gas emissions the immediate benefit is the reduction in speed induced crashes that seem to be so prevalent on our roads these days. Employers need to be more aware of the pressure they place on truckies to meet unrealistic deadlines. Also truckies should not tolerate such pressure because their lives are worth more than the load they carry.
