Motorists in Sydney are being warned to expect a greater police presence around major intersections over the coming weeks.
Police in Sydney are hoping to improve adherence to road safety among the citizens of Sydney after they discovered more than 100 road infringements in a space of less than 12 hours.
The following excerpt from Fullyloaded.com.au explains:
“Greater police presence around major intersections in Sydney catches out road users and pedestrians flouting the rules
A police operation aimed at improving compliance with road rules in the heart of Sydney has uncovered more than 100 infringements in the space of 12 hours.
Operation Franklin, which is conducted regularly with a focus on major intersections in Sydney’s CBD, detected 33 traffic infringements, 71 cases of pedestrians crossing the road illegally and four motorists committing intersection offences.”

According to the report police also conducted 55 random breath tests but thankfully there were no positive results. But one issue which has police concerned is the number of pedestrians who are preoccupied by mobile devices causing them to behave irresponsibly when crossing roads.
Drivers need to be aware of these pedestrians especially when driving in highly populated areas where there are a lot of pedestrians. Speed needs to be adjusted accordingly and drivers themselves should not allow any distractions to the driving such as mobile devices etc. because pedestrians often behave erratically when crossing the road and even more so when distracted. The post went on to explain:
“All too often, police are seeing pedestrians tuned into electronic devices, oblivious to traffic conditions, stepping out onto the road at dangerous locations and putting lives at risk,” Superintendent Stuart Smith says.
“Pedestrians are road users too, and these operations remind them to follow the rules and stay safe when walking in high-traffic areas.”

Another thing drivers need to be on the lookout for is road works and road workers. There are a number of road work projects going on and drivers need to be cautious.
An accident which took place a while ago resulted in the death of an RMS employee when he was run over by a B-Double truck. This excerpt from Fullyloaded.com.au explains:
Steven Eliot died while he and four other RMS employees were working on the F3 Freeway at Warnervale in New South Wales. A B-double attempting to pass another truck hit an RMS vehicle on the shoulder of the road, which then collided with Eliot, killing him and seriously injuring his colleagues.

The incident is an example of what can happen when drivers aren’t cautious around pedestrians and road works. Even on quieter roads or on rural roads, drivers should be alert because pedestrians or animals could pop out of nowhere and cause a crash.
Truckies need to recognise the importance of not driving while fatigued. It is vital that they take the necessary rest breaks and do not exceed driving hours because this will lead to driving while fatigued which experts have proven is as bad as driving while intoxicated.
