Queensland on “Wake-Up Call” operation. Bad news for rogue operators, Queensland road authorities have announced a blitz on heavy vehicles on its roads as part of the ongoing “Wake-Up Call” operation, as it has been code named. The crackdown will include random inspections which the transport industry should be prepared for. They will be targeting fatigue and overloading in particular, however all breaches will be taken seriously. The operation will target high crash risk areas and areas where heavy vehicles are prevalent. So far over 78 fatigue management issues were detected and 23 registration issues. 67 defect notices were issued and 45 overloaded vehicles. These were just some of the problems detected. Operators are being held responsible by authorities and will be prosecuted for serious breaches. Truck operators, aware of the operation are being forced to comply with the rules and take sufficient rest breaks which in itself is a victory for road safety. The aim of the operation is to initiate changes that will improve road safety and hopefully by holding transport operators responsible, authorities will do just that by targeting driving-hours regulation breaches and heavy vehicle loading breaches.
