The 90km speed limit for trucks being trialled on Melbourne’s Monash Freeway has been pulled by VicRoads because they discovered tailgating had increased considerably.
VicRoads has said it will instead be concentrating on the second stage of its trial, a ban on trucks in the far right lane.
According to the department’s Chief Executive John Merritt, while they had learned a lot from the trial, cars are actually more aggressive than trucks in tailgating behaviour in some sections of the freeway.
During the trial, 831 less trucks daily, on average, use the right hand lane.
Mr Merritt called on all motorists, heavy vehicle drivers and light motor vehicle drivers to “stop tailgating and stay safe”.
