Trucks May be Forced onto West Gate Tunnel Tollway

Heavy vehicles that are feeling the pinch of increased tolls, higher registration charges and already minuscule operating margins are opposing the forced removal of trucks from suburban rat runs in Yarraville and Footscray as of 2022.

The move to force trucks off suburban streets in Yarraville and Footscray once the Western Distributor project is completed, and onto the future West Gate Tunnel tollway has been met with criticism from the industry.

The Andrews Government announced that as of 2022, heavy vehicles will be prohibited from Francis Street and Somerville Road in Yarraville and Buckley Street and Moore Street in Footscray.

The ban will apply 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, forcing trucks to pay a toll to travel to the Port of Melbourne through the planned West Gate Tunnel. The cost of the tolls has not yet been announced but the consortium contracted to handle the project has been announced, headed by John Holland and CPB Contractors .

Only trucks making deliveries locally will be exempt from the ban.
