Truck Driver Fined over Work Diary Inefficiencies

Truck drivers that don’t take their work diary entries seriously should learn a lesson from the fate of one driver with a West Australian licence who now lives in Victoria. After falsifying 5 work diary entries, the driver was fined $17,500 and ordered to pay costs of $900 after being stopped by Roads and Maritime Services heavy vehicle inspectors at the Marulan heavy vehicle safety station. The driver was in control of a 63 tonne B-Double combination at the time, moving from Port Kembla to Dandenong in Victoria. Inspectors found that the submissions in the driver’s work diary did not correspond with real time images which authorities were able to obtain from the Safe-T-Cam network. Although the driver was fined, employers also have a responsibility to keep records of their drivers’ activities. In addition to drivers, operators, schedules, consignees and consignors have responsibilities under the chain of responsibility to ensure schedules do not cause the driver to exceed driving hour regulations.
