Volvo Trucks released a report earlier in the year having collected data from over 1700 crashes involving trucks in Europe. The researchers examined approximately 26,000 road fatalities within the EU annually since 1969.

The research revealed that 15 per cent of fatal road crashes involve a heavy vehicle and the fatalities are mostly pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists.

According to Volvo Trucks traffic & product safety director Carl Johan Almqvist, safety has to “extend beyond the truck driver”. Safety must also involve educating pedestrians and other unprotected parties.

He highlighted the importance of focusing on the Vulnerable Road Users including bikers, pedestrians and motorcyclists.

He also mentioned the major contributor to fatal crashes being smartphones which he says is completely distracting to people. Find out more https://www.fullyloaded.com.au/industry-news/1706/safety-should-extend-beyond-truckies-volvo-trucks-says.
