Heavy vehicle drivers, operators and owners in New South Wales have additional incentive to ensure their vehicles are compliant as state authorities reveal the results of the fifth instalment of Operation Catapult. The operation targets heavy vehicles and non-compliance in Sydney and began in March this year. The NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, together with Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) officers intercepted vehicles along the M4 near Homebush and surrounding areas during the safety blitz. Officers uncovered 19 defects and 15 infringements after inspecting 36 heavy vehicles last week. They also conducted random drug and alcohol tests on 47 drivers. Speaking on behalf of the Joint Traffic Task Force, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command assistant commissioner Michael Corboy said authorities made no apologies for issuing infringements and defect notices to those that risk people’s lives with their non-compliant vehicles.
