Following an investigation which revealed that some heavy vehicle drivers were improperly assessed, transport authorities are trying to track down these drivers.
It was revealed that drivers involved in the investigation never held a regular car licence before being allowed to drive heavy vehicles, and were attempting to transfer their credentials in other states.
Western Australian authorities launched an investigation in July which resulted in more than 300 truck drivers’ licences being suspended. They were found to have been improperly assessed at a Perth driving school.
The truck driving school had conducted assessments for all heavy vehicle types including multi-combination trucks or road trains, able to carry more than 60 tonnes.
Drivers, mostly immigrants, obtained their heavy vehicle licences in WA by handing over a foreign licence and a competency certificate from the driving school.
Following the findings, around 70 drivers have been transferred to other states, where state authorities are trying to identify them and get them off the road or have them reassessed properly.
