A trial currently underway in Sydney is aimed at helping to ease congestion and improve road safety by giving trucks more time to cross green lights.
Wireless technology installed in about 100 heavy vehicles involved in the trial and 100 intersections on crucial freight routes allows traffic signals and trucks to “talk” to each other, giving trucks priority at traffic lights. Extending the green light timing for trucks will allow them to cross the intersections and reduce the number of times they have to stop. As we know trucks take a longer time to start up after they have stopped.
This will hopefully ease congestion and improve safety, easing delays for all motorists.
State government will consider expanding the technology to emergency vehicles and buses if the 3 month trial is successful.
