The Brazilian president had to send in the army and federal police to clear the highways blockaded by striking truck drivers recently. The drivers were protesting over the soaring cost of fuel in the country. The country’s economy was brought to it’s knees and the protests prompted a state of emergency to be declared in Sao Paulo, the continent’s largest city. The basic needs of people weren’t being met because goods weren’t reaching their destination, with supermarkets and restaurants running low on supplies. Protests started when drivers became infuriated by rising fuel prices and anger over repeated scandals involving prominent politicians.
