Victoria needs to attract more young people to the trucking industry with major infrastructure projects pushing up the demand for drivers.

The Victoria Trucking Association (VTA) says the industry has been suffering from low driver numbers for a long time and are struggling to attract young people to the industry. That is why the government has launched a major review that will look into attracting young people to the industry.

VTA CEO Peter Anderson said the West Gate Tunnel project will see a truck leaving the Footscray construction site every 2 minutes at the height of excavations. He admitted that meeting this demand would be difficult.

He said the project alone would require an additional 125 truck drivers.
