Tackling the Growing Truck Driver Health Crisis

NSW Launches Transport Industry

An interesting article on Fleetowner.com highlighted the importance of physical fitness for truck drivers, given the mostly sedentary nature of the job which can cause weight gain.

The post mentions Siphiwe Baleka who was once a champion swimmer for Yale University who gained alot of weight when he became a truck driver. He developed Fitness Trucking and earned the moniker “fitness guru of the trucking industry”. He said the trucking industry is failing to give drivers the education and tools they require to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Most operators only go as far as offering health screenings but stop there.

He criticised the fact that drivers are sent into the industry with little or no training on what is going to happen to their circadian rhythms or metabolism. Add to that sleep deprivation and you have all the ingredients for weight gain and later in life health problems as well.
