The Queensland Trucking Association (QTA) issued a statement late last year after a member raised concern, revealing that in New South Wales, a truck driver can be fined $1392 plus 4 demerit points for incorrectly displayed number plates.

The QTA took issue with the change in enforcement strategy and how the penalty was decided, given that national regulations are moving more towards uniformity, but this is in contrast to that.

The statement issued by the QTA warned drivers that NSW Revenue will issues fines for unregistered vehicles if the number plate is incorrectly displayed or damaged, instead of issuing a defect notice or warning letter about the damaged or illegible number plate. The driver of the vehicle will be fined $1392 and 4 demerit points and the owner of the truck with be fined $692.
