Fortescue Metals Group has defended its autonomous trucks after one of the vehicles was involved in a crash on the Pilbara at the Christmas Creek mine. The autonomous truck reversed into a stationary truck. There were no injuries. The company confirmed a full investigation would be conducted but that the collision was not a failure of its autonomous haulage systems (AHS).

The company said the system had improved the company’s operations and productivity. Since the introduction of the system in 2012, AHS trucks have safely traveled over 24.7 million kilometres, the company said.
