A TRUCK driver will appear in court on prohibited drug charges after other road users contacted police when they saw him swerving across the road.

Police said motorists called Triple Zero on Friday, May 24 at about 6.30pm after seeing the semi-trailer, which was travelling on the Pacific Highway at Urunga, swerving across both lanes and onto the highway shoulder.

The truck, police allege, was also travelling at speeds about 40km/hr, causing obstruction in the 110km/hr zone.

Police said motorists continued to follow the driver, utilizing their hazard lights alerting other traffic, until police were able to locate them along Keevers Road at Raleigh.

Police stopped and spoke to the driver, later searching the cabin and located what they will allege to be an amount of cannabis, along with a glass pipe and a “bong”.

The 48-year-old man from Camden Head was arrested after a failed sobriety assessment and taken to the Coffs Harbour Hospital for blood and urine samples to be taken.

The driver was served a court attendance notice for possession of a prohibited drug to appear at the Coffs Harbour Local Court on June 17, 2019.

Samples of blood and urine were obtained and sent for drug analysis, pending further charges based on results.
NSW Police Force Traffic and Highway Patrol Command chief inspector Phil Brooks said other road users wouldn’t tolerate poor behaviour by others.

“In this example, they had the presence of mind to contact police and guide them to the truck,” he said.

“It was fortunate for this driver, and other road users, that he was intercepted and dealt with quickly.

“Those road users should take great comfort from their actions, knowing that they, and local Highway Patrol officers, have made a difference on our roads.”
