Truck operators need to recognise the importance of Electronic Stability Control (ESC) in improving road safety, following the release of data by Monash University Accident Research Centre showing the effectiveness of the technology. ESC safety systems detects the stability and sideways acceleration of a truck and slows the vehicle down when it senses a risk of a rollover, automatically. Speaking at the Woodflow Optimisation 2016 Conference on Timber Logistics/ Harvesting, the ATA’s senior advisor of engineering, Chris Loose said ESC safety systems were crucial to heavy vehicle safety. Data from Monash shows that mandated use of ESC in heavy vehicles could reduce fatal heavy vehicle crashes by 4 per cent and serious injury crashes involving these vehicles by 7 per cent. The Monash University Accident Research Centre believes 25 per cent of fatal heavy vehicle crashes could be prevented with the introduction of mandatory ESC safety systems for heavy vehicles.
