The Transport Workers Union (TWU) has blasted the draft Master Registered Industry Code of Practice as a safety instrument, labeling it as ‘flawed’. In a submission to the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) on the draft code, the TWU says the flaws in the draft are similar to  those of the National Heavy Vehicle Law (NHVL). According to the union the voluntary code fails to address the root cause of why the transport industry is in crisis. The code is not capable of removing the economic incentives that cause the pressures on truck drivers in the first place, the union says. In the submission, the TWU highlights the Macquarie University study, Regulating the Work Health Safety of Australia Road Freight Transport Drivers, of January 2017, which states that, following the abolition of the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal (RSRT) in 2016, there is currently “no regulatory mechanism that can eliminate existing incentives for overly tight scheduling, unpaid work, and rates that are effectively below cost recovery.” See more at https://www.ownerdriver.com.au/industry-news/1808/twu-lambasts-draft-industry-code-of-practice
