The main causes of truck crashes have been identified as speeding, drink and drug driving, fatigue and trucks that are not properly maintained.  In order to avoid a similar fate, truckies and operators should pay attention to these issues that are so rife in the road transport industry because according to chain of responsibility laws everyone in the chain holds some responsibility for what happens, from the consignor to the driver.  So remember to:

  • Stick to speed limits and slow down when approaching curves in the road
  • Drive only when properly rested and avoid driving while fatigued
  • Do not take drugs to stay awake or drink drive
  • Ensure the truck is in excellent condition before embarking on a journey, ensure all checks are done
  • Ensure the trucks load is to specifications and restrictions
  • Take a rest every 2 hours for at least 15 minutes especially when on a long journey
