Two senior accident researchers – Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) senior research fellow Sharon Newnam and University of the Sunshine Coast senior research fellow Natassia Goode, have called for truck accident investigation methods to be reviewed, believing it to be narrow and simplistic, focusing mainly on drivers.
The researchers say causes of truck crashes involve many factors for such a simplistic approach.
Their calls come after the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) also called for a change and renewed calls for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) to be used to investigate major truck accidents.
The researchers called for a shift in an approach from one that currently focuses on drivers to a systems-thinking approach.
