An Australian engineer has warned that the trucking sector should be doing more to address the health hazards associated with diesel fumes exposure.
Legal experts in the transport industry have said companies should be guided by their workplace health and safety policies when looking into the issue.
Long term exposure to diesel fumes could be a huge occupational health threat, unless the industry does more to address it including becoming more tech-savvy – MD of Mathers Hydraulics Technology (MHT) Norm Mathers said.
As a hydraulic engineer and inventor, Mathers said many health studies have linked long term exposure to diesel fumes with serious health issues such as dementia and cancer. However the industry continues to ignore the warning signs.
The European Commission has demanded direct action on reducing truck and bus use by 2025 and it is likely Australia will do the same. Leading technology to minimise diesel emissions does exist in Australia but little has been done to make use of it so far.
